Danny's presentation looks at the important role volunteers play at Scarborough Health Network and the difference they make to patients, families, staff, and the wider community. SHN has more than 1,000 volunteers who help in many different ways, from welcoming and guiding patients to supporting clinical programs, seniors’ services, fundraising, and patient advocacy.
He also highlighted examples such as the Call Ahead for Volunteer Assistance program and the Hospital Elder Life Program, along with my own volunteering experiences in the Cath Lab, Cardiac Rehabilitation, Patient and Family Advisory activities, and patient-perspective programs.
Although volunteer time can represent millions of dollars in contributed value, the presentation emphasizes that the greatest benefit cannot really be measured financially. It is found in the reassurance, kindness, listening, guidance, and personal support volunteers provide when people need it most.
