Toast to the Queen, Canada and Rotary – President Elect Basil
Guests: Harry Hakomaki and Dhamay Kanthan from Scarborough Twilight Club and Michael Conway from Agincourt Club.
Announcements:
  • Harry Hakomaki presented President - Elect Basil with a certificate for 2015-16 Presidential Citation Gold and another certificate for ‘Rotary International District 7070 The Oddy Robson Memorial Bell Award’. This was presented to the Rotary Clubs of Scarborough for contributing the most to inter-club fellowship. Harry and Dhamay had been at the meeting where District Governor Michael Bell were presenting these certificates to the Clubs. They were the only ones from any of the Scarborough Clubs, so they kindly attended our meeting to give them to us.
  • Basil advised that at a recent TV Auction meeting it was agreed that our club would ‘man’ (person?) 10 of the 15 phones on Friday and Saturday. An email will be sent out asking for volunteers for this.
  • Basil also reminded us that at noon on Canada Day there will be some special celebrations at Scarborough Civic Centre for the swearing in of some new Canadian Citizens. A good representation from Rotary is hoped for.
Marbelous Draw: Mike Mushet conducted the draw and our guest Dhamay drew the ticket which was claimed by Peter Masson, but he couldn’t find the mutant marble so was given $5 as a consolation.
Sergeant-At-Arms Al Meredith collected money owed from last week. Fines were collected from anyone who didn’t know the incoming RI President’s name and his wife’s name (John Germ and Judy Germ). Happy Bucks: Peter donated back his $5 as he was happy we now have good sailing weather. Arthur was happy as he had been in Sault Ste Marie and had a good time with many of his friends. Michael Conway contributed as he was happy that his daughter had an article published in a magazine.

Our speaker today was our very own Arthur who gave us some insightful information into the Zika virus. He started off by telling a joke about the first man on the moon which had nothing whatsoever to do with the Zika Virus and can’t be repeated here!
He told us about the history of viruses and how they spread, the sizes of them and how they reproduce. There are seven different groups of viruses classified according to their genetic make up. The Zika virus was first discovered in a Rhesus monkey in 1947.  Incubation of Zika is from 3 to 12 days, fever, rash, joint pain, conjunctivitis (Red eye) are some of the symptoms. In pregnant women the virus infects the stem cells in the developing fetal brain resulting in a smaller brain and head. Some vaccines are being developed.
Arthur’s Conclusion:
The future looks promising. With the development of vaccines and treatment methods we
should have the Zika epidemic well under control in the near future. In the meantime use of
repellents, mosquito nets and insecticides like pic coils are our best bet. In addition, if you are
going to Rio, it is important to practice safe sex and avoid Zika areas if you are pregnant.
(Peter Masson has already distributed the power point and audio of his presentation. It has highly recommended that you at least look at the power point if possible.)

Jim Boyko thanked Arthur for his presentation and Basil presented him with one of our Club’s anniversary scotch glasses (he now has 4).
There being no further business President – Elect Basil closed the meeting.
