Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accepted Rotary's Polio Eradication Champion Award at the 2018 Rotary International Convention in Toronto. The award was established in 1995 to recognize heads of state, health agency leaders, and others who have made a significant contribution to polio eradication.

In his remarks to conference attendees, RI President Ian Riseley noted that Canada was the first government to join Rotary in committing to eradicate polio and continues to ensure this focus remains a top global health priority. In 2017, Canada pledged US$75 million, bringing its total contribution to polio eradication to roughly $640 million. Through a number of initiatives, including safe vaccines, key partnerships and the investment in female health workers, we now have the tools to succeed.
