Announcements:
· Steve Heyward advised us that his club - Toronto Twilight – are having a fundraiser on February 28th called ‘A night to play’. Tickets are $50. More information at their website http://www.torontotwilightrotary.com/
· Gordon reminded the members going to Euchre night that it is this Friday (21st) at 7.00pm – if you are registered and unable to attend then please let Danny know.
· Dhanni advised there is to be a Group 4 meeting at The Delta after our lunch meeting.
· Rocco reminded us that there is a Directors’ meeting on Monday February 24th at Basil’s.
Marbelous Draw was conducted by Charles; our guest Steve Heyward drew the winning ticket with Rocco having the lucky ticket, unfortunately he couldn’t find the mutant marble, but was given $5 as a consolation.
Sergeant –At-Arms today was Basil. He asked a Rotary question: whose daughter helped found the Toronto Twilight Club where our guest Steve is from. A few fines were collected from those who didn’t know. The answer is PDG Mike Phelan’s daughter.
Olympic Happy Bucks: Frank Allison – a friend of his daughter’s is skating at the Olympics and she did much better than expected. Arthur - Brad Jacobs on the men’s curling team is from Sioux Ste. Marie where Arthur lived for a few years. (We found out after the meeting that they are through to the final.)
Other Happy Bucks: David Seemungal went skating on the weekend and fell and bumped his head, but he seems to have recovered alright. Gerd flew to Sioux Ste. Marie to pick up an autistic boy and when he landed there were ice patches on the runway, but everyone ‘survived’ alright. Gordon donated $25 being happy that he won the 50/50 draw last week.
Speaker:
Gordon introduced our speaker Roger Keeley. Roger is General Manager of the Polyethylene Division for Atlantic Packaging Products Ltd. in Scarborough. A native of Vancouver with a background of achievement in the packaging industry, Roger progressed through the ranks from a Salesman to Sales Manager to General Sales Manager through to Director of Marketing prior to his present responsibilities. He is a most active individual who believes wholeheartedly in the competitive free enterprise system. Roger is renowned in the business world as high-energy motivator with a fine sense of humour. Roger was a football official (not the soccer kind) for over 30 years. He worked 4 Vanier Cups followed by 5 years in the CFL.
Roger spoke on leadership. Items of note:
· A survey showed that business is lost 9% of the time and 82% of the time because of a bad management attitude
· MOTIVATION gets you started, but HABIT keeps you going.
· Leaders are made not born.
· Best ways to control stress (v) exercise (iv) diet (iii) open communication (ii) focused relaxation (i) goals and values.
· Traits for success: ability to communicate, enthusiasm, appearance, balance, leadership, to work co-operatively with others in your group.
Roger stated that he had the opportunity to talk to Larry King once and Roger asked him of all the people he had interviewed what was the ‘common thing’ that made them successful. His reply was ‘a passion for what they do and have fun doing it’.
Frank Allison thanked Roger for his speech and presented him with a certificate confirming the restoring of a person’s eyesight in India.
