SAA – David Seemungal

Our two guests were from Barbados and SAA David fined everyone who did not visit the island of Barbados and those who did not wear a Rotary pin.

* Arthur was happy for a visit from his sister

* Basil being an Engineer was trying his hands on applying “Precision cooking” on baking a turkey for Thanksgiving. He did cook the turkey only to find out that he baked a frozen turkey using the thawed time instruction.

* David was happy to wear short sleeve at this time of the year.

Peter Masson introduced our speaker, Nevine Yassa to give us an update on ROOTA.

Nevine is a member of the Scarborough Rotary Club and an advocate for the kids in the impoverish areas in Egypt.

ROOTA – Rising out of the Ashes is a Canadian organization, currently working on its’ charitable status with CRA.

Nevine visits Egypt at least once a year to continue her work with the Zabaleen, predominately Christians who are garbage collectors. She personally visited the garbage site. Last year our club purchased one loom for the women there so they can earn an income to provide to their families by using the looms to weave rugs and sell them.

In addition to seeking out donations for purchasing looms, Nevine and ROOTA are working with the APE (Association for the Protection of the Environment) in Egypt on a Literacy program to help children get a base education. The government of Egypt provides free education to its’ citizen. However, children from this marginalized community do not go to school during the day as they are busy assisting their parents sifting through garbage from 6:00 am to 3:00 pm every day.

Please listen and view the video. It’s an “eye opener”.
