Enloe Wilson, Manager, Fund Development, Faith and Community, Habitat for Humanity, Greater Toronto Area (habitatgta.ca) was introduced by Arthur Retnakaran.

The subject of his talk was on the origin of habitat in the GTA and their contribution to the housing for the needy.

Habitat for Humanity was started by a millionaire couple, Millard and Linda Fuller in 1965. After a visit to Koinonia Farm just outside Americius, Georgia, they were so impressed with the egalitarian attitude based on Christian principles being practised that they gave up their millions and dedicated their lives to humanitarian work building homes for the poor and started Habitat for Humanity. In 1984 they recruited Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter and Habitat  became global. In 1985 Habitat was established in Winkler, Manitoba and later moved to Winnipeg. Soon in 1988 it came to Toronto.

In Canada 1 in 5 families live in substandard homes and this includes 1 in 3 children. Although many homes have been built by Habitat volunteers in Toronto there is still a long waiting list. Families are expected to pay a modest down payment or  provide 60 hours of volunteer work and assume a 0% mortgage to qualify for a home. Their latest venture is to build three, 3-storey buildings at 140 Pinery Trail for a total of 50 ownership units. Groundbreaking was on August 4th and it will be their largest undertaking and will be built by women volunteers.

Gerd Wengler thanked him for a wonderful presentation.

Cheque Presentation:  Arthur Retnakaran presented Enloe Wilson with a cheque for $1.500 on behalf of our club. It was in memory of Arthur's late wife Sarsi who volunteered for nearly 10 years at Habitat Restore in Sault Ste. Marie. Arthur provided $500 and our club augmented it with $1000.

The meeting came to an end with President Basil Dias wishing everybody a pleasant week.
