Board Meeting Monday, Feb 29 th at Maddy’s home

Alan Meredith has become the booster chair for the 2016 TV Auction.
He shared some concerns that were reached as a result of last year’s auction:
1. We can do much better if we get 100% participation
2. We are now in 3rd place out of five clubs with only $87 k in total raised. When we had our own auction we started with raising $40 k and increased that to $60 k before we were merged with the other clubs.
3. We have 29 active members and if we set targets of $2,000 per member we could return to the success that we have had in the past.
4. Al said that the 2016 Auction is Open for Business and as Gerd recalled the best advice given to salesmen “You Contribute or You’re Fired”
Frank Lippa noted that from his location in York Region that they watched the 2015 TV Auction on You-Tube.  But the live action was delayed as many as 9 or 10 minutes so that any attempt to make a bid found the bidding closed.  Many of his friends who he had encouraged to watch the Auction found the same problem.

50/50 Draw
The winner(s) Gerd and Mike but they could not find the mutant marble.

Sergeant at Arms: Donna Salamalay
Donna extracted much moolah from all in attendance as we pondered her challenge question:
Today February 24 th is designated “Engineering Day” in what country?
She went around the table to all including the engineers present and none of them were aware of IRAN being the designated country. Some muttering was heard “Where does she find these odd facts for skill-testing questions?”
Happy bucks were donated for the recent reports in the media as a result of Dave Hardy’s great Scarborough Renewal work over the past two years. Scarberia is gone; Scarborlight has emerged! James also reported that Mayor Tory is 100% behind this renewal effort and will be the featured speaker at next Wednesday’s luncheon meeting of the S.P.A.

Program Presentation
Gerd introduced our newest member, Frank Lippa, President of C.H.A.M.P. Engineering, Mechanical Engineers started in 1976.  See: http://www.champeng.com/profile.html
Gerd was effusive in his introduction of Frank for his community orientation.  Ask him for a favour and he will always go beyond what can be expected and shares his hospitality and as we have seen here in our club his generosity.
Frank started his company C.H.A.M.P. Enginering 30 years ago.  They are mechanical contractors who specialize in high-rise and large industrial buildings which typically burn over 100 million BTU’s per hour in energy every day.  They are not into new construction but rather in retrofitting older plants and buildings to achieve maximum energy efficiency.  He gave an example that an average 150/200 unit apartment building uses $100,000 per year in natural gas for heating.  A saving of 5% in energy costs can have a significant impact in both cost reduction and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Frank reflected back how a brainstorming meeting in the days of limited Fax connections they were able to manage the temperature of boilers in several buildings instead of having to visit and inspect each one separately.  To-day with digital connections they are 10 times more efficiently monitored via the internet.

Frank went on to report that his company has been nominated four times for the Etobicoke Energy Awards and twice for the Enbridge energy efficiency awards and Park Property complexes were the winners for the most energy-efficient buildings in the region.

Frank gave us a brief peak into his personal history as an immigrant from Rome, Italy arriving by boat in the late ‘50's and today his two sons are managers of the company and his wife joins them every day to check out the business.  His reward is to have his family with him every day.

The Q & A session followed which is part of the recording that follows.
