Also there is a Pub Night on Thursday at The Stone Cottage Pub, if you plan on attending and haven’t done so then please register.
  • Dhanni announced that we have three sponsorships for the TV Auction and of course we need more. She also announced that there will be an International Service Group Meeting after lunch on October 19th.
  • Maddy told us that if we have any items to be delivered to the TV Auction warehouse she will be able to take them, so please contact her if you need help with this.
  • Basil had a ‘long list’:
    1. Our club was well represented at the Habitat for Humanity Women Build, serving breakfast to a lot of ladies. We were able to wave the flag and talk about Rotary.
    2. Just a reminder that the District 7070 Conference takes place on October 21st and 22nd at the Sheraton Parkway at Leslie and Hwy 7. Registration on Friday Oct. 21 starting at 4:00; Welcome Party at 6:30, and several hospitality suites. Great speakers; check out the District website.
    3. The Scarborough Business Association which was one of the results of Dave’s Scarborough Renewal Campaign, is now launching After –Five Networking. The launch is today, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, at Bluffer’s Park Restaurant, which is at 7 Brimley Road South. Free Admission and parking, cash bar.
    4. Tomorrow is our Pub Night at the Stone Cottage Inn, 3750 Kingston road. Starting at 6:30, lots of fellowship and brews.
    5. On Friday morning I will be meeting with the kids and their teacher at our adopted school, Precious Blood, to help with the new Interact Club, our mentoring program, and to hand over some funds for our breakfast program.
    6. Past Rotary International President Wilf Wilkinson will be the Honorary Attendee at the Scarborough Rotary Club’s lunch on Tuesday October 4th at 12:30. The Wilf Wilkinson Peace Award will be given to The Canadian Centre for Refugee and Immigrant Health Care. The cost of their lunch is $15, and they request an RSVP by September 30th.
    7. There is a new Scarborough Rotary Club starting up, sponsored by the Toronto Sunrise Rotary Club. This club, consisting mainly of past Rotarians from Bangladesh, will meet on every other Sunday night at 8:30 at 3000 Danforth, near Victoria Park.
    8. TV Auction, TV Auction, TV Auction! The deadline for bringing in items to be registered is October 28, a date which will soon be here. At our most recent Board Meeting, we heard of a lot of causes asking for our support. We need everybody stepping up to the plate to be able to answer the call to duty. Our club will be contributing $5,000 to the Italian earthquake cause.

Marbelous Draw: Al Meredith asked our guest speaker Cécile to draw the ticket which was claimed by Gerd and Mike. They drew one ticket each but couldn’t find the mutant marble so were given $5 as a consolation.
Sergeant-At-Arms: Jacob informed that on this date in 1867 Toronto was confirmed as being the capital of Ontario. Also on this date in 551 BC Confucius was born (so he would be 2,567 years old!). Jacob’s favourite Confucius quotes: “Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated”, “Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life” and “It doesn’t matter how slow you go as long as you do not stop”. Jacob then ‘got down to business’ and fined anyone who had not yet put any items into the Auction. Then asked for happy bucks: Frank Lippa was happy as our club had given a donation to help the people in Italy who had been affected by the recent earthquake. Dhanni contributed $5 happy bucks as kudos to the power of Rotary, thanking Frank Lippa for giving her the peace of mind in helping her to arrange a new heat pump installation in her daughter's condo with his trusted connections. Basil gave some sad bucks as his brother has passed away aged 68. He ‘confessed’ that although they were both in the same soccer team and Basil was captain, Basil never admitted to his brother that his brother was a better soccer player and able to run faster. His brother leaves a wife and three children, but Basil still has three sisters to ‘take care of him’. Gerd gave back the $5 and announced that he and Dorothy ‘only’ had another 110 kilometers to go until they had completed the Bruce Trail 4 times!

Program:          110 Squadron  Air Cadets

Our speaker today was Cécile Thompson. She was introduced by Mike Mushet. She spent three years in the Royal Canadian Air Force and is a retired Vice Principal from the Durham Board of Education. She was also chair of the sponsoring committee of 110 Squadron of Air Cadets. She thanked us for our donation last year- it helped to replace about 50 of their cardboard boxes they use to collect donations with new metal ones. She told us that their expenses are quite high as they have to pay $10,000 to rent classrooms and a gym at Stephen Leacock School where they meet twice a week. Air Cadets are from age 12 to age 19 and are very strict about this. Some Squadrons charge a $40 enrollment fee; however, 110 Squadron does not do this. Cécile is very proud of how the Air Cadets instill confidence into the youth. Quite often they join being very shy and leave being very confident of themselves. She also advised that this year is the 75th anniversary of the Air Cadets.
Mike thanked Cécile and gave her a cheque for $2,000 on behalf of the club. Dhanni also thanked her and presented her with one of our anniversary glasses.

There being no further business President Basil closed the meeting.
