Remembrance day 2024

Land Acknowledgement. President Gordon started the meeting with the reading of the Land Acknowledgement.

Anthem: Arthur

Toast to The King, Canada, and Rotary.

Attendance: 15 members and 1 visiting Rotarian, Jade Downey of the Haliburton Rotary Club.

Total attendance: 16

Program: Remembrance Day

President Gordon introduced Danny Cassidy as moderator of the Remembrance Day program, and, as usual, he presented a well-rounded program that reminded us of the sacrifice of the heroic veterans who preserved our way of life when it was in jeopardy.

The program involved several members who contributed to the presentation through readings and videos.

The Last Post was played, and there was a minute of silence in honour and remembrance of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for us.

In addition to Danny’s excellent slide show, Gerd showed slides of memorials in England to the animals who were also sent to war, including the impressive Canterbury War Horse. In World War 1, in England alone, 14 million horses died in the war effort.   https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/6rh5d6oavnm23bzs09zec/A-Eulogy-to-Animals-in-War.jpg?rlkey=e93k6ptwg4b6ign2m3atjx148&st=je7lkfpg&dl=0

Peter Masson also showed and passed around memorabilia from his father, who served in both world wars and commanded the Oshawa regiment in the war.

All in all, it was another excellent, thought-provoking Remembrance Day presentation.

Announcements:

Basil reminded us that it was Rotary Foundation Month and that our club had yet to make a Polio Plus contribution this year.

President Gordon announced that there would be a Club Service Committee Meeting on Monday night.

There was no Sgt-at-Arms segment in light of the lengthy program.

President Gordon terminated the meeting with a clang of the bell.

To the Unknown Soldier – a thank you.

We do not know your name, although you were once a mother’s son

She must have waited patiently for some word from you and your safe return

Your race, politics, creed, they matter not to us, as you and the woman who let you go,

Sacrificed everything for our liberty

A prayer of thanks, we say for you and for the mother who lost a son

And for the rights, we have that your sacrifice won

National War Memorial and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Ottawa, Canada ...
