Arthur introduced the Speakers, Kaitlin and Shannon, from the Central East Region Cancer Screening and Prevention Program.

Approaching 50% of Canadians will have some kind of cancer in their lifetime. Many of these cases could have been prevented if people took the necessary preventative steps and were screened regularly.

In the attached presentation, they covered the fact that 4 in 10 cancer cases in Ontario could have been prevented by healthy living practices and regular screening.

Smoking is the leading cause of cancer.
Two out of ten Canadians smoke tobacco leading to an increase of 32,700 avoidable cancer diagnoses.

Skin cancer is caused mostly by the sun. people trying to get a tan. 4,300 new melanoma cases will be caused by the sun's UV rays.

Other cancer cases can be prevented by sitting less, moving around during the day and having an overall active lifestyle. Diet is also very important, along with limiting alcohol consumtion.

More Canadian children should be vaccinated for HPV.

We were made aware of the cancer screening programs available such as Colon, breast, lung and cervical cancer. In the attached presentation they outline the eligibility criteria for these and other screening programs.

Peter thanked Kaitlin and Shannon for a very interesting presentation.
