Rotary District 7070
Stories
NSRC Bulletin December 8, 2021
This week our meeting was a hybrid meeting with Danny and Gordon at our new meeting place (the community centre at Aurora Court) with other members attending via Zoom. Danny had purchased an ‘Owl’ 360 degrees camera with microphone and speaker. This was an experiment that worked very well.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
President Danny opened the meeting with a toast to The Queen, Canada and Rotary.

15 members were in attendance plus Basil’s guest Dorothy Evans. (Basil and Dorothy were attending via Zoom from Jamaica.)

Speaker: Our speaker this week was President Danny. He showed us a video he had made giving us a ‘walk through of our new meeting place. This included the location (shown on Google Maps) getting to the room from the entrance and a panoramic view of the meeting room. We hope to have the first ‘in person’ meeting on January 5th (the first meeting of 2022) with members also being able to attend through Zoom. This will probably be our ‘White Elephant Auction’ meeting. Danny will of course be sending out the information prior to the meeting.

Announcements:
  • Dave Hardy ‘hinted’ that it is Gerd’s birthday today – so a rendition of Happy Birthday was sung by everyone. Dave commented afterwards that it was probably the worst ‘Happy Birthday’ rendition he had ever heard. Gerd had to wipe away the tears with a hanky!
  •
  • Danny:
    • Would like some of us to do a ‘Rotary Minute’ which would be posted on our You Tube channel. Some other clubs have found this helps in recruiting new members.
    •
    • Encouraged everyone to make sure they can access ‘My Rotary’. There is a lot of good information there. If you need help please contact Danny.
    •
    • The cost of the new ‘Owl’ equipment was approximately $1,800, which Danny has paid for. As we cannot use the club’s Foundation funds Danny requested that perhaps members can make a contribution. Danny started it off with a contribution of $150. If you wish to contribute, please send an email transfer to Dhanni with the notation ‘Owl Equipment’. The email is ‘dramdeen88@gmail.com’.

Sergeant at Arms

Rocco was SAA this week and asked ‘how everyone’s week was’?
  • Peter requested that the screenshot be taken again as he had missed the first one.
  •
  • Gordon was happy everyone was still keeping healthy.
  •
  • Courtney attended a meeting of the ‘Social Assistance Coalition of Scarborough’ from which he got a lot of information. He was also glad the ‘Happy Birthday’ singing was kept short!
  •
  • Dhanni has all her Christmas decorations up, but there won’t be many people at her home this Christmas. It will be a double celebration however as John’s birthday is on Christmas Day.
  •
  • Arthur reported that he heard from someone in Sault St. Marie that the Covid cases there are now 200 – last time he was there only one case was reported. Pfizer has reported that their vaccine is very effective against the Omicron variant. He will be having a family trip to Deerhurst spending Christmas there.
  •
  • Frank announced that his sister’s funeral is on Friday.
  •
  • Rocco asked Gerd if he was happy with our singing of Happy Birthday to him. He replied that if he was in the USA he would have to “plead the 5th amendment”!
  •
  • Mike said he was happy that he had a walk in the snow that morning.
  • Suresh announced that his older son Ranjan Agarwal was elected as Vice President of Ontario Bar Association which is the largest law association in Canada. He takes over as president as the first ever Canadian born to South Asian born parents in the history of Ontario Bar Association since it’s formation. As a father he is very happy for him and his family.
  • Mandy is happy that it is her son’s birthday tomorrow.
  •
  • Dr. Beauty is happy that her mother has been discharged after a long period in hospital.
  •
  • Dave Hardy advised that his brother-in-law was taken to hospital with a debilitating illness. He has had surgery which was considered a success. Dave’s daughter and her partner have taken a trip to Oman, then to Dubai, back to Oman and then back home for Christmas.
  •
  • Basil told us that he made sure that Dorothy had packed everything she needed for their vacation but forgot to pack his own swim trunks. He was surprised that the staff at the resort where they are staying still recognized him with his mask on.
  •
  • Rocco wished everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year.
  •
  • Danny said he can’t believe he has already been President for 6 months. He is glad we are moving forward towards meeting in person, collecting happy bucks and singing the national anthem (hopefully better than how we sung Happy Birthday). He stated that he had been stressed about the meeting in person, whether or not the equipment would work etc. but he had spent 4 hours volunteering at the emergency ward at the hospital the day before and after seeing the people in there and how hard the doctors and nurses work he feels very lucky for what he has.
  • He has been in contact with Microsoft to get the ‘Microsoft Suite’ free for our members. In order to do that he asked if anyone knew how to log into the club’s email (info@......) as he has to send them an email from that address. Nobody seemed to know so he will probably have to contact Clubrunner.

President Danny then wished everyone Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays then closed the meeting.
