Announcements

  • Amongst others present, avid footballers present expressed regrets that England is now relegated to 3rd place at best if they win their next and last match as FIFA winds down to its finish this weekend in Russia.
  • Conference for R.I. District 7070 will be held on October 27th in Prince Edward County. Details to follow.
  • Gerd reported on his three weeks away in Germany and in Britain. He has come back with his company’s board approving six new development projects (all rental units) in Toronto and the GTA. This will be a major multimillion dollar investment that will require additional senior staff to be taking charge of this building program. Gerd also reported on his four days staying in London and hiking many ups and downs in the Coxwolds. Some even included visits to the pubs along the way for “refreshments” all during great weather.

Marbelous Draw: Today Danny Cassidy arranged to have Gerd be the winner but for only the
$5 consolation prize.

Sergeant at Arms:
Frank Alison announced the the grieving Brits present to-day would be exempt from finds. (We couldn’t find a Croat or a Frenchman attending to celebrate!) .

  • David Seemungal will be joining his parents for a week’s visit to Jamaica for the celebration of their 60th wedding anniversary.
  • Steve Rutledge who was now just recovering from being coordinator of volunteers for the Whitby Sunrise Ribfest which was a great fund raiser again this year.
  • Arthur shared the “clean” joke that Gerd had rejected as too clean when he had requested them to share during his overseas visit. Something to do with Stormy Daniels and the Queen and a poker game being played in heaven.
  • We talked about an appropriate memorial for the life of Frank Lippa who had been so supportive of the work of the club both financially and in his time. A number of members have made donations in his name to our Foundation and we have agreed that the sum be donated to support the work being done by “Hope Air”

Program:

Gerd went on to introduce Steve Rutledge (who has been a frequent visitor to our club) and who has been the the President and chief spark plug for:
“Adopt a Village in Laos”

Steve brought his own film production showing the transportation project underway to bring water to a village in Laos. He has prepared a very informative pamphlet which is copied and linked below. Here is a brief excerpt from page two of that brochure.

“As of June 2018, the Water Filter project has provided 35 villages totaling over 20,000 people with about 4,000 water filters plus hospitals and schools. Where rural villages do not have access to a reliable water source, we augment our water filter program with the provision of permanent water supplies. This is done through dam construction, several km of pipe, water tanks and traps throughout the villages.”

Jim Boyko shared his memories of the many times that Steve has reported to the club about his work in Laos and thanked him for his unfailing commitment to improving the lives of the villagers in that country. Laos was so devastated by the US “Secret” war in the nine years
(1964-1973) that destroyed one-third of the country’s population.
