Sergeant at Arms:

All of us contributed something to the cause.  We are all proud to be Canadians and are forever thankful of those who fought for our freedom and safety in both World Wars.

Program:

Conducted by Danny Cassidy:

Firstly, Frank Allison gave us an update on Steve Zelinski who fought in World War II and has been a long-time member of our club.  Steve is turning 100 on December 16.  Happy birthday to Steve in advance.

Danny gave a very detailed and inspiring presentation of not only WWI and II but a brief summary of those who lost their lives in many other wars over the year.

Some of the issues he discussed are summarized as follows:

(i) We are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Armistice, Canada played a major part in the final 100 days of the first world war leading up to the Armistice while suffering 45,000 casualties.

(ii) A brief discussion of General Curry who was an incredible war strategist for Canada.

(iii) Canada was recognized as a separate country when the Treaty of Versailles was signed.

(iv) Aside from the major 2 world wars there were other atrocities and genocides in the 20th century.

Danny recited the song " and the band played waltzing matilda."

Then Peter and Joan Masson gave brief emotional speeches, where Peter described his father’s involvement in the wars.  Joan also spoke about the reconciliations with Germany after the Wars.  Our Rotary Club hosted an Exchange Student, Krista Kaiser from Germany about 20 years ago.

Many other emotional issues were discussed during the presentation.

The session ended with Avrum, one of our new members, reading the poem, In Flanders Fields.

Everyone must listen to the attached audio presentation, to really appreciated the emotional presentation of the day. Please click on the links in the presentation to see the video and hear the music. Other links are in blue for an expanded information source.
