Maureen Bird and Hal • Haldene Alleyne, Explain how RC of Toronto are assisting the District with getting donations to St Vincent to help with the volcano devastation.
Maureen Bird: Joined Rotary in 1996 after careers in Computer programming, teaching high school math and financial planning
13 years on ISC - 4 sweat Equity trips to Malawi, 2 to Cambodia.
Over 10 years chair or Co-chair of Rotary AIDS/Community Needs fundraiser.
District Areas of Focus team - Maternal and Child Care.
Haldene Alleyne, Education: Robotics Engineer, Retired after 34 years career in robotics. At present teaching at Durham college. Married for 35 years, have three children. Join The Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise in 2018. Member of the Oshawa photography club.
Haldene presented coverage of the devastation in St. Vincent. Showing the damage done by the recent volcano eruption. He also explained how the St Vincent Rotary Club has been helping. What is needed now are funds to continue doing their good work.
Maureen explained how Toronto Rotary Club has taken the point on raising funds. She showed how individuals can donate directly and get a tax receipt and how clubs and individuals can donate through R.C. Toronto and get tax receipts. Maureen is keeping a file on donations from individual clubs.

Basil thanked the speakers for their talk and explained his feelings as someone who spent many years in High School in St Vincent.

Barry surprised everyone with the news that 3 Paul Harris Fellowship awards were to be handed out today.
Paul Harris Award. The highest award in Rotary is the Paul Harris Award. It is given to a Rotarian or a member of the community that has made an outstanding contribution to the community.
Barry set the scene. Putting a vision in our heads of a black tie event at Scarborough Golf Club, having finished our fabulous meal we are ready for the main event of the evening. The awards presentations.
Barry and Gerd did the honours but not before teasing the audience with cryptic references as to who the recipients may be.

Gordon Brown
Barry made the presentation to Gordon.
Highlighting his many contributions to the club over the past 20 years. Gordon has served as President twice. As the current President, he has had to shepherd the club through the pandemic, being forced to hold every meeting and social event on Zoom. Gordon is well-deserving of this honour as everyone on the call congratulated him.
Gordon wasn't sure how to respond. So he stood up and took a bow. He thanked the club for what he said was a very unexpected honour.
Courtney Fisher
Barry also made the presentation to Courtney.
Since joining the club Courtney has led the way in teaching us what the Rotary motto of service above self means. Courtney is a qualified teacher but is better known for his outstanding work in the community. In his life Courtney has seen first hand poverty and desperation. He was key in founding the Scarborough rosewood food bank, currently known as Rising Sun Food bank Foundation. Courtney is also the incoming club president for year 2002 - 2003. Courtney is well-deserving of this honour. Everyone congratulated him.
Courtney was somewhat lost for words but thanked the club for the honour.
Danny Cassidy
Gerd presented the award to Danny.
Danny has been with the club for many years. In the past few years, he has been responsible for the bulletin and the club's social media presence. He attends every meeting and always helps when called upon. His work for cancer research outside of the club has raised tens of thousands of dollars with the Ride to Conquer Cancer. After falling off of his bike with a cardiac arrest some years ago, he helps with the hospital system whenever he can. Danny is the incoming President succeeding Gordon. Like the other two recipients, Danny deserves this award and was congratulated by the members.
(Editor Danny: While writing the last line seemed somewhat self serving I really appreciate this very unexpected honour. )
Sergeant at Arms. Frank.
Frank asked for happy thoughts although time was short.
Frank was impressed with today's presentation about St Vincent and was happy to see that no one lost their lives. He congratulated the recipients of the Paul Harris award which he said were well deserved. . He was also happy to receive a cheque from The US government for his sister.
Everyone was happy to see Emmanuel. Emmanuel has a new job in Bobcaygeon and has been very busy over the past few months. Hopefully we will see more of him.
Gordon was Happy that his club Chelsea won the European Champions League. The highest position in European football.
Gerd commented that in the past three years the championship has been won by a team supported by three of our members. Gordon, Gerd and Frank.
The club benefited by $500.00 donated winnings from bets involving Gordon Alan and Alan's friend.
