White Elephant. Jan.12 2022
Chair: President Danny Cassidy
Toast to the Queen, Canada, and Rotary: President Danny

Anthem: Temporarily on hold due to the virtual meetings. Will be revived when we meet in person.

Attendance: 14 members + 2 guests (Basil’s wife Dorothy and Alan’s wife Cheryl)

Program: Virtual auction in lieu of White Elephant sale conducted by Alan Meredith.

The following 4 charities have been selected by the Club Services Committee for bidding of $ 25 units. Eg. 4 units = $100.
  1. Kerry’s Place Autism Service – championed by Frank Allison
  2. Scarborough Women’s Centre – championed by Arthur Retnakaran
  3. Ride for Cancer – championed by Danny Cassidy
  4. Menstrual Pad Project in Uganda – championed by David Semungal (for Trudy)
Frank: Autism was discovered only recently and it attacks 1 in 6 children. The cause is not fully understood and several genes have been implicated. It has a severe impact on families and is well understood by Frank whose grandson is autistic. Kerry’s place helps families from diagnosis to adult stage. ($ 1,300 collected)

Arthur: Scarborough Women’s Centre was established in 1982 and has touched the lives of over 170,000 women. Domestic violence has increased by 13% in 2019 during Covid isolation. This center trains victims to regain their self-esteem and train themselves for jobs.($ 1,225 collected)

Danny: Danny has collected money for cancer since he was 9 years old. The bike ride is over 2 days and covers 200 km and his target is $4000. There are more than 100 different cancers that affect 44% of men and 43% of women. Deaths due to cancer were 84,600 in 2021. Research has progressed well and many cancers show 90% recovery but some like pancreatic cancer show only 5% recoveries warranting more support for research.($ 1,150 collected)

David: Support for menstrual hygiene by supplying reusable pads will greatly assist young women in Uganda. The cost of pads is very high and many cannot afford them. Children lose 3 days each month at school due to a lack of pads. Trudy, who hails from Uganda, in concert with the International Committee under Barry Smith has initiated a program to produce reusable pads in Kampala with the help of a local Rotary Club.       ($1,400 collected)

The auction was conducted in a superb fashion by Alan and resulted in collecting $5.075 which is a new record!
Basil moved that tax receipts be issued for contributions of $25 and above and was seconded by Frank. Please e-Transfer your contribution to  Dhanni ASAP at  dramdeen88@gmail.com

Sergeant at Arms (Arthur):
Barry: Nothing exciting but planning an anniversary celebration.

Mandy: All is well and she is happy.

Danny: Happy to see his wife back from Ottawa ending his batching.

Dhanni: Visiting her daughter in Trinidad for 3 weeks and put up with 80 degrees (F) weather!

Frank: Had an exciting week and told us why he missed the meeting on the 5th. His friend called him and told him about citing the short-eared owl at Downs view Park and told him that he should go to the park at pre-dawn to see the bird. Frank being an avid bird photographer decided to go very early the next morning. To his chagrin his wife Betty was not so thrilled about his planned owl venture and told him not to go. Frank being who he is decided to sneak out early in the morning and put his clothes in the garage including his long underwear. His alarm did not go off so he was a little late and hurriedly put on his clothes, took his camera equipment, and took off to Downs View Park. When he got off the car he realized that he was wearing his long underwear but had forgotten to wear his pants! It was too late to get back and so he decided to press on. Needless to say, he got some nasty looks from fellow birders. Besides he realized he did n’t have any pockets and lost his glove. To add to his woe he had to pee! He also dropped his camera equipment!! He did manage to get some pictures of the owl but was delayed because of his search for the missing glove. He came home and heard a strange sound emanating from his bedroom that evening. To his dismay, he realized it was his alarm clock that was set to PM!

Rocco: He said he had a long story but since Frank took so much time he wasn’t going to tell his tale!

Gerd: “Why did the Rotarian cross the hotel lobby? To get to the bar!”

Basil: Tried to order room service in Jamaica from Toronto and received a one-finger salute!

Alan: Barry, Alan and Basil had birthdays which they celebrated modestly. Alan hopes to meet his family hopefully within the next 2 years!!!

President Danny wished everyone a good week ahead and ended the meeting.
