are both members of the Rotary Club of Karkala, District 3182, India.
Suresh introduced our speaker, Dr. Ashok Gupta, who was speaking to us from Detroit via Zoom.
Suresh has known Dr. Gupta for 50 years. He is married to Suresh’s wife’s cousin. Dr. Gupta’s initial medical education was in Punjab, India. In 1977, he moved to Detroit after completing his residency in St.Joseph Mercy in Oakland, Michigan. Dr. Gupta specializes in internal medicine but is very well known for looking after the senior community of Detroit. He is known as ‘the walking doctor’ as he believes walking every day is the best medicine for a lot of ailments. He has been a Rotarian for nearly 42 years with the Auburn Rotary Club and is a recipient of the Paul Harris Diamond Fellow for his community services.
Dr. Gupta talked to us about ageing. He mentioned that he prefers to talk about ‘health span’ rather than ‘life span’. Although genetics can influence your health, they are not everything. He recommended that people should start looking after themselves early and not wait until they are sixty. Some of the things he recommended to keep healthy were to ‘get out of the house’ and stay active. Walking every day. Having a social circle. Stay hydrated. He also stated that 2-3 cups of coffee every day can be beneficial.
