Today, we memorialized Remembrance Day, and Danny Cassidy did a marvelous job as the presenter and speaker. He pre-selected a panel of readers consisting of Fellow Rotarians to highlight some memorable times during the wars.
Barry Smith read a heartfelt poem written by Glennys, his wife. Her father fought in the Second World War for Britain.
Frank Allison introduced the song “Christmas in the Trenches”, sung by the British, German, and Russian soldiers during WW1 at Christmas when these soldiers put aside their differences and came together for one day to celebrate.
Alan Meredith read a letter sent by Thomas Sweeney, who fought in WWI in France. He sent this letter to his wife and son, asking her to relay a message to the wife of a fellow soldier who died in the war.
Danny Cassidy beautifully sang “The Band Played Waltzing Matilda.”
Dhanni Ramdeen read the words on the plaque at the Gallipoli Memorial in Turkey, a message from the Turkish President to our allied soldiers’ mothers.
Danny played the “Canadian Forces Remembrance Day video” and recited the lyrics of the song “The Green Fields of France.”
Peter Masson recited the poem “In Flanders’ Field”.
Basil Dias recited "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old" from the 1914 poem "For the Fallen" by Laurence Binyon
