Speaker: Steve Rutledge from the Whitby Rotary Club.
Steve has been working extensively on projects in South-East Asia, Laos, for the last 16 years and has been updating our club annually on his progress and accomplishments there. Steve gave us a brief history of the reason he chose to work in this area. During the war, every eight minutes a plane would drop a bomb, so the people were traumatized with 30 % of the population perished, 15% passed away and 8.2% infant mortality, which is now below 3%. There was no sanitation whatsoever. Steve and his crew, consist of local villagers and some Rotarians, work in districts to lower the infant mortality rate and to oversee the villagers building dams and water tanks to capture water supply. The household then used the water filters he provides (from donations from friends, Rotary clubs and others) to clean the water at the household level. Steve also currently working on projects to replace roofs and repair schools, built secondary school toilets, provided winter coats and provides reusable feminine napkins to girls in secondary schools.
