Steve Fine - Founder and President of the Melanoma Education Foundation
President Gordon made the introduction.
Steve Fine is the founder and President of the Melanoma Education Foundation
He started it in 2000, shortly after his son died of Melanoma at the age of 26, and has devoted himself full-time to the foundation since.
The foundation's primary activity has been educating high school and middle school wellness teachers, providing free online lessons to teach their students about self-detecting melanoma while it is curable. The outreach has since been expanded to Rotary clubs in the USA and Canada.
Steve is a member of the Rotary Club of Peabody, Massachusetts.
Melanoma can strike young and old, affecting both those exposed and not exposed to the sun.
There are an estimated 200,000 new cases in the USA each year.
The most common site is on the backs of males, and for females, it's the backs of the legs.
Everyone should check their skin monthly...there is a website that provides instructions on how to do this...www.skincheck.org
Tanning beds are "BAD" ....UVA's are 10x stronger than being outside in the sun... see www.sunless.com
The best defense is applying SunScreen; however, most people don't apply it heavily or often enough, so the SPF they end up with is much lower than what the product says.
There is a melanoma walk in the clinic downtown Toronto you can go to to be checked out.
Unfortunately, Stephen closed the meeting before downloading the recording, so there is no recording. He did, however, send the following information links.
