Induction of Tom Boyko

New Member Info — Rotary Club of Mount Pleasant South Carolina

President Danny turned the meeting over to Basil and his induction committee of Past President Gordon, Rocco, and President Danny himself, and Tom Boyko was asked to join them for the induction.

President Danny first explained to Tom the purpose of the induction and the obligations and privileges of Rotary. Rocco next read out the Object of Rotary, being to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster the development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service, high ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all occupations and their ability to serve society, the application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s life, and the advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace.

Rocco was followed by Past President Gordon, who explained the Avenues of Service of Rotary, being Club Service, Vocational Service, Community Service, International Service, and Youth Service.

Basil finally explained and used posters to illustrate the 4-Way Test, being:

1. Is it the truth?

2. Is it fair to all concerned?

3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships, and,

4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Basil then presented Tom with his membership package, and Tom was welcomed into the club.

Tom stated that he was looking forward to doing anything that needs doing in our community.

Tom next presented his classification talk. Tom has been married for 23 years and has three children, aged 20, 18, and 10, so it will be a while yet before he and Nevena become empty-nesters. Tom has been working in the bookkeeping and accounting industry for the past 8 years, first with his father, Jim Boyko, and then with the firm of Kelday and Company P.C., which was previously known as Strype, Riley, and operated by Doug Strype, a former member of our club. Before his current career, Tom had worked in landscaping, but when he started to develop back issues, Jim gave him a job in his accounting business, and Tom’s new career was born.

Tom’s interests include biking and traveling. Tom also likes to watch hockey and play soccer,

and he used to play golf when he had more time. Tom is also interested in the financial markets, an interest he picked up from his Dad, who explained to him that he should read the reports on business in all three newspapers, the Star, the Globe, and the National Post, since each one has a different perspective. Following this research, he can then form his own opinions on the market in general and certain stocks in particular.

Gord suggested that Tom could carry on Jim’s Annual Predictions, and Tom was open to the idea.

Dhanni pointed out that Tom has been doing the club’s taxes for the last few years on a pro bono basis, and she thanked Tom for this benefit that he had been giving to the club without being asked to do so.

Frank Allison then thanked Tom for his classification talk.
