Announcements:

Gerd Wengler – On the occasion of Valentines Day, and on behalf of past, current and future Assistant Governors present, he expressed the love of the District for our Club (filial, I think).

Barry Smith said there will be a Group 4 meeting after lunch next week.

Sai Foo Lau brought gifts to all Club members on the upcoming celebration of Chinese New Year – Year of the Dog.  He also thanked to Club for support for the Rosewood Food Drive.

Basil Dias shared information about the new luncheon costs at the Baton Rouge.  Costs will go up to $15.50 but with HST added it will not be more than $20.  He said the minimum wage will be going up again in 2019 so the costs will go up again then.

Mike Mushet stated he and Jacqueline went to the District Grant Seminar and now we are able to apply for matching grants.

Arthur Retnakaran stated that the Community Services Committee met and recommended the approval of the list of all requested items.  The Board will provide a final review and if acceptable, approval.  Arthur also said he was recently the guest speaker at the Scarborough Club.

Marbleous Draw:  Jim Boyko did the draw and Sai Foo learned how elusive the mystic marble can be.  He later donated his consolation $5 to the fine box plus $.05 that Jim found on the floor and gave to him.

Sai Foo Lau as Sargent-at-Arms then promptly turned around and shook down all Club members for not knowing the day of the week that the eve of Chinese New Year falls on.
Basil added to the education of Club members by asking what “Fon Me Fat Chu” means (sorry if I got the English translation wrong – I’m just learning Mandarin) – apparently, ‘congratulations on your good fortune’.  In an effort to further impress Club members he said that Year of the Dog stands for – a year in which you will have to work hard.
Dave thanked Sai Foo for the gifts and congratulated Donna on the fantastic new web page.

Speaker:

Samantha Murray, Associate, Community Events & Organization from Plan Canada – ‘I am a Girl’ program spoke about HIV Aids eradication in El Salvador.  Apparently, 80% of Plan’s funds go to on the ground projects – which is excellent for charities.  Plan is the largest charity in Canada and focuses on gender inequality and extreme poverty.  Success has been very good by advocating for girls to learn, lead, decide and thrive.  Plan advocates that everyone with AIDS has the right to health, free from discrimination.  Around the world, there are 37 million people living with AIDS and 1 million deaths annually.  5000 people are infected each day with 2 out of 3 being girls and women.  Plan’s program in El Salvador has resulted in a 30% decrease in AIDS from 2011 to 2015.  In the first phase, they saw 1000 new cases each year, 4000 children orphaned by AIDS and 20,000 people living with AIDS.  Their education and prevention programs are supported by the Global Fund that provides $1 to $9 funding support.  Arthur thanked the speaker and also stressed the importance of distributing antiviral drugs.

Joke of the day:
"Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that who cares? He's a mile away and you've got his shoes!"
