President Mike asked the directors to provide a progress report to the club.
International Director, Barry Smith, was the first one on the podium. Barry indicated that his group identifies worthwhile project overseas. Some projects were supported annually such as “Operation Eyesight”, “Sleeping Children around the World” and the “Christmas Card Fund”. There is also Polio Plus, the flagship of Rotary International where $4000 was allocated. New projects are under consideration after thorough research is completed. This year, the group is looking into projects like “Canadian Landmine Foundation”, “Adopt a Village in Laos” where $2000 was allocated, ROOTA, and an “Orphanage in Sri Lanka”.

Second to report was Club Services Director, Gordon Brown. His group oversees running the club’s activities. Gordon indicated that annual membership fees remain the same as last year at $250. The POD is now changed from a two month rotation to a one month rotation and it seems to work well. His group tries to arrange an event every month. Events organized are “Pub Nights”, “Christmas Party”, and “Charter Party”. This group also sends out sick and bereavement cards to members when required. Gordon pleaded with members to please respond to invitation whether they are attending or declining.

Arthur Retnakaran, the Director for Community and Vocational services was the next to present. Arthur took over this role from Donna Salamalay, our incoming president. He said the group continues to support projects such as “Paul Harris Scholarships” and “Agincourt Community Services” and “Habitat for Humanity”.  The philosophy of the group is to support as many local projects as possible.

  • So far we received approximately $25K in donations. Awaiting the final proceeds amount from items sold on EBay.
President Mike thanked the presenters for their contributions to the club.

Joke of the day:
It was a cold winter day, when an old man walked out onto a frozen lake, cut a hole in the ice, dropped in his fishing line and began waiting for a fish to bite. He was there for almost an hour without even a nibble when a young boy walked out onto the ice, cut a hole in the ice not to far from the old man and dropped in his fishing line. It only took about a minute and WHAM! a Largemouth Bass hit his hook and the boy pulled in the fish. The old man couldn't believe it but figured it was just luck. But, the boy dropped in his line and again within just a few minutes pulled in another one. This went on and on until finaly the old man couldn't take it anymore since he hadn't caught a thing all this time. He went to the boy and said, "Son, I've been here for over an hour without even a nibble. You have been here only a few minutes and have caught about half a dozen fish! How do you do it?" The boy responded, "Roo raf roo reep ra rums rrarm." "What was that?" the old man asked. Again the boy responded, "Roo raf roo reep ra rums rarrm." "Look," said the old man, "I can't understand a word you are saying." So, the boy spit a glob into his hand and said, "You have to keep the worms warm!"
