Adopt a Village in Laos
Attendance: 11 members and 3 guests (including speaker).

President Mike opened the meeting

Anthem: Arthur

Grace: Basil

Toast to the Queen, Canada and Rotary – President Mike

Guests: Cheryl Meredith (Al’s better half), Gaspar Collett Perira (visited last week) from Brasil,  our guest speaker Steve Rutledge from Whitby and Gabe Ho also from Whitby.

Announcements:
  • Basil announced that we had ‘successful donations’ at the Ribfest. He also suggested at the next Club Assembly we should discuss if we want to do it again next year.
  • Basil advised that nobody has volunteered to represent our club for the ‘replacement of the TV Auction’. If no member is willing to do this then we will have to withdraw our club from the discussions.
  • Basil had been given a painting for the club from Lynn Wiley that they had got at a TV Auction, but no longer wanted. We need to consider what we wish to do with it.
  • Dave Hardy presented the club with two Rotary banners he brought back from the International Convention in Atlanta. One was from a club in India and the other the official convention flag.
  • Mike reminded us of the Board Meeting tomorrow night (August 10th) at The Baton Rouge. This is open to all members.

Marbelous Draw: Basil conducted the draw and asked our guest Gabe to draw the ticket which was claimed by Jim Boyko. He was not able find the mutant marble, but got $5 as a consolation.

Sergeant-At-Arms: Basil fined anyone who had not volunteered at the Ribfest and / or who had not responded to his emails. Happy Bucks: Al contributed $5 thanking Basil for his work regarding the Ribfest. Dave Hardy contributed as his daughter, son-in-law and grandson had a good vacation in Newfoundland. Steve Rutledge (our guest speaker) contributed as he is having a very busy summer including moving to Whitby, attending 5 Ribfests (including working all weekend at Scarborough’s) and doing presentations. Gordon gave two bucks, one as he was happy the English Premier League starts this weekend and the other ‘not so happy buck’ as when the Premier League starts it also means there isn’t too many weeks of summer left. Frank was happy as his grandson obtained a football (the ‘oval ball’ type) scholarship at the University of Waterloo. Arthur told us that in order to win the Marbelous draw (he has won several times) you have to lead a “good clean life”!!

Speaker: Al Meredith introduced Steve Rutledge from the Whitby Club. Steve is President of Adopt A Village In Laos.

We have given donations to this organization. The mandate of the organization is to provide new water sources, clean water, education facilities and sponsorship, hygiene training and hygienic toilets in Laos, with greater focus in the rural regions. Water filters with the bottles are provided to each family in the village (as shown below) and it is mandatory that a member from each family attend training as to how to maintain the bottles and filters otherwise their family would not get one.

As these filters reduce bacteria in the water by over 95%, cases of diarrhea are greatly reduced and productivity (in the rice fields in particular) increases as there is less absenteeism.  Steve showed us a photo of women digging a 9.5 km trench for a water pipe.

Jim thanked Steve for his presentation and gave him one of our anniversary glasses.
There being no further business President Mike closed the meeting.

Joke of the day:
A guy is sitting at home when he hears a knock at the door. He opens the door and sees a snail on the porch. He picks up the snail and throws it as far as he can. Three years later there’s a knock on the door. He opens it and sees the same snail. The snail says: ‘What the hell was that all about?’
