Sergeant at Arms:
Jacqueline Smith played the role and fined everyone without a Rotary PIN. Frank Lippa was happy that his mother celebrated her 92nd birthday; Gerd Wengler slipped and hurt his foot and ended up at Emergency but was relieved to find that he did not break any bones. He was happy for the wonderful healthcare we have in Canada; James Burchel has been steadily gaining weight and blamed his Italian wife for the wonderful cooking but finally he managed to lose 12 pounds! Frank Alison received birthday wishes from his Insurance Company! Alan Meredith called Basil to find out when his Anniversary was ! Arthur was happy to receive a cheque for 8K from the CRA. Steve and Jacqueline celebrated their 1 month anniversary ( wonderful to be newly married ). Jim was disappointed that he won only the consolation prize. Mike Conway had a sad buck about the poison pill introduced by the CRA  to no longer pay a tax refund if the tax return was filed late (Apparently it is seldom enforced).

Speaker:
Guy Bonnell, Vice President of Community Development, Scarborough and Rouge Hospital Foundation was introduced by Jacqueline Smith. Guy briefly described the recent history of Scarborough. Scarborough was amalgamated into the GTA in 1998 and is the most diverse suburb in the world and is also one of the safest. At Scarborough and Rouge Hospital (SRH), the patient experience comes first. With three hospital sites (Birchmount, General, and Centenary) and five satellite sites, SRH provides a broad spectrum of health services to one of the most diverse communities in Canada. Created through a merger of The Scarborough Hospital’s Birchmount and General sites and Rouge Valley Health System’s Centenary site in December 2016, SRH is committed to delivering the highest quality patient- and family-centred care, with a focus on enhancing access to services for the Scarborough community. In doing so, SRH works in consultation and partnership with community members, the hospital Foundation, other hospitals, health care organizations, the Central East Local Health Integration Network and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, and its affiliate, the University of Toronto. Patient services include a full-service Emergency department at each site, advanced maternal and neonatal care in state-of-the-art birthing centres, and specialized paediatric care. In addition, SRH is home to a number of regional programs serving the central east Greater Toronto Area and beyond, including nephrology, cardiac care, vascular surgery, and vision care, and is recognized as a centre of excellence in orthopaedic surgery, cancer care, and mental health. The SRH an operating budget of $860 million and has a staff of 5,160 including 1,060 physicians. There are 1,272 volunteers play a vital role in the operation of the 3 hospitals. SRH has the largest kidney disease program in Canada and has the largest breast reconstruction program in Ontario. The challenges SRH faces is immense. To update the obsolete equipment $60 million is required. Although the Ontario Government spent 7.5 billion to rebuild the hospitals, SRH did not receive any funding. Expert panel has recommended 90 million for SRH. Pledges to a tune of 20 million has already been raised.

Basil Diaz thanked him for his comprehensive presentation  and gave him a certificate of eye sight restoration carried out in Ghanna with the support of our Rotary Club.

Conclusion: President Mike Mushet concluded the meeting by wishing everyone a great week.
