Announcements from President Basil:
  • Our club’s Charter Party is booked for Friday June 23rd at the Scarborough Golf & Country Club
  • The Rotary Clubs of Scarborough are again hosting the Canada Day Citizenship Swearing in Ceremony at the Scarborough Town Centre’s Albert Campbell Square. Peter Mason has kindly agreed to lead this rewarding project, where we hope to entertain over 100 guests.
  • Our club will again be collecting donations at the gate for the Scarborough Rotary Ribfest. This year’s Ribfest runs from Friday August 4th until Monday August 7th.  This fund-raising project requires the entire club’s participation, and we hope that all members will come out with the family and friends to help us.
  • It is a pleasure to announce that Barry Smith has agreed to stand for election as the Director of our International Service Group for the next Rotary year.
  • Jacqueline Smith has agreed to be our club’s representative on the committee of Scarborough Rotary Clubs hosting our Home Hospitality for the 2018 Rotary Convention.
  • We still need a club representative to lead our new auction fund-raiser. At this time we are examining having our auction using e-bay.

  • Peter announced that the Paul Harris Scholarship dinner will be held on Wednesday, May 31st at the JC’s Banquet Hall. The cost is $35 per person, can be paid by cash or credit card.
  • James expressed his appreciation to Peter, Arthur and Saifoo for their participation on behalf of our club in the park clean-up.
Dave Hardy:
  • I’m hoping that as many Rotarians as possible attend the First Annual Meeting of the Scarborough Community Renewal Organization.  The Mayor will be speaking as well as our District Governor Jim Louttit.  The Mayor has been quite complementary of the Rotary Clubs in Scarborough and it is important that we all attend to hear his message – particularly important with the international conference in Toronto next year.  It’s Monday 6:30 at the new School of Hospitality at Centennial College.

Gordon introduced our guest speaker Kevin Harrison from Muscular Dystrophy.
Muscular Dystrophy (MD) has been around since 1954 as a national charitable organization. There are 160 types of MD. This disease affects the nerve and muscles and is fairly progressive. There are 50,000 people in Canada living with this disorder. There is no cure to date.
Kevin has been involved with MD charity for over 20 years. Originally from Montreal, was diagnosed with MD at an early age and spent most of his early years in and out of hospitals. At the age of 14, he became mobile when he got his first scooter. He was so happy with the change that he wanted to give back so he raised $5000 that summer and since then has developed a passion for Fund Raising.  In 1998, he started doing fund raising at a corporate level when he raised $180K.
Kevin is a graduate from Concordia University, met his wife at a MD conference, married 15 years ago and they have a 3 year old son who is completely healthy.
